Drathuun Knoll
A settlement at the edge of the Shelmire Knuckles in the Tidefen Reach of Korrashal, serving as a staging and supply point for responding to land-based threats.
The Shelmire Knuckles — the low stone ridges that rise inland from the tidal flat system — provide ground stable enough for the kind of permanent installation that the tidal flat environment cannot support. Drathuun Knoll is positioned at the Knuckles’ edge, where the stable ridge ground meets the more variable terrain of the tidal system’s inland approaches: close enough to the flat system that Knoot forces can move quickly between the Knoll and the tidal territory, far enough onto the ridge ground that the installation itself is not subject to the flooding conditions that govern the flats.
Land-based threats to Korrashal approach differently than maritime threats: from the east, through the border zones with human territories and, further south, the territories of the Crocodylians. Drathuun Knoll faces this direction, positioned to receive forces moving toward the tidal flat system from the inland approaches and to stage the response from ground that both suits the Knoots and is accessible to the threat axis.
Staging Function
The staging role at Drathuun Knoll concentrates forces and supplies before they are deployed into the tidal flat system to engage land-based threats. The Knoll’s position allows Knoot forces moving from Brinecoil and the other settlements through the relatively stable Shelmire Knuckles terrain to consolidate at a point that is close to the engagement zone without being within it. The tidal flat knowledge that makes Knoot forces effective in their home terrain is not lost at Drathuun Knoll — the Knoll is at the edge of that terrain, where the Knoots’ comprehensive understanding of the environment extends.
Chronicle Project accounts that describe Knoot defense of their territory from land-based approaches note the combination of terrain knowledge and preparation time as the consistent factors in their effectiveness. Drathuun Knoll is the physical expression of the preparation time factor: the installation exists to ensure that when a land-based threat reaches the tidal flat system, the response is already staged and ready.
Drathuun Knoll carries both functions. The position at the Shelmire Knuckles’ edge provides natural sightlines into the inland approaches — leaving that observation capacity unused would be inconsistent with the Knoot’ thoroughness in using what their terrain provides. The Knoll feeds early warning into the same communication network that connects Brinecoil and Saaltrin Shoalhome, but facing east toward the land-based threat axis rather than the coastal approaches. The staging and observation functions reinforce each other: the Knoll can begin staging a response while simultaneously tracking the threat that the response is being staged for.
Supply Infrastructure
The supply function at Drathuun Knoll provides the materials that sustained operations in the tidal flat system require: food, equipment, the specific materials that Knoot magical practice uses, and the giant anoles and salamanders that serve as transport in conditions where their slow steadiness is more practical than speed. The Shelmire Knuckles’ stable ground is more reliable for supply logistics than the tidal flat system’s variable conditions, and the Knoll’s position at the interface between the two makes it the natural supply concentration point.
