Insectoids

The K'tharr Kingdom operates within a rigid biological caste system governed by a High Queen, fielding massed infantry alongside domesticated megafauna including volatile flying Piran cavalry.

The K’tharr Kingdom is defined by biological hierarchy and volcanic military capability. It fields two kinds of military force simultaneously: massed Droma-Akt infantry in the thousands, and domesticated megafauna that would be decisive on any battlefield by themselves. The most notable is the Piran—a hydrogen-filled flying creature that serves as air cavalry. Should a Piran handler be incapacitated mid-engagement, the Piran reverts to a primal hunting state and attacks the nearest living organisms. This combination of biological hierarchy and volatile domesticated fauna shapes the Kingdom’s entire operational character.

K’tharr society is fundamentally stratified, with roles determined by birth and biology. The Sovereign Caste are biologically larger, stronger, and more physically imposing than humanoids—they hold all positions of authority, governance, and high command, with exclusive access to the finest armor and weaponry. The Droma-Akt constitute the vast majority of the population, existing in subservience to the Sovereigns. Individually weaker but deployed in overwhelming numbers, they form the bulk of the Kingdom’s armies, lightly armored and organized in massed formations. Sovereignty is maintained through a strict matriarchal system: while regional Queens manage specific territories, ultimate authority rests with a single High Queen based in the capital.

The K’tharr domesticate several native creatures for labor, transport, and warfare. The Krak is the most common utilitarian creature—a large beetle-like insectoid used as a mount or to pull chariots and light cargo. The Drune is larger and more massive, utilized when significant load-bearing capacity is required—hauling heavy siege equipment or bearing crewed howdahs. The Piran, as noted, are flying, fish-like entities that store hydrogen in specialized internal bladders, rendering them lighter than air. Highly intimidating when armored and saddled, they remain inherently semi-wild and dangerous.

The K’tharr Kingdom occupies central arid plains and mesa regions. Interactions with neighbors are sparse: Sitan Giants to the south-west are generally avoided across difficult terrain, various human civilizations to the west remain wary of K’tharr expansion, and the geographic isolation limits contact with elven, dwarven, or coastal reptilian factions.
