Knoots

Newt-like amphibian humanoids organized into clans tied to specific coastlines and river mouths, using intimate knowledge of tidal terrain as their primary weapon.

The Knoots hold Korrashal not by fielding armies against those who enter, but by being the only inhabitants who fully understand it. The tidal flats flood twice daily. The brackish pools shift with the season. The mangrove forests have no usable paths. The Knoots know all of it—every channel, every shelf ridge, every safe crossing—and they use that knowledge as their primary weapon. Outsiders who mistake their small stature for vulnerability rarely get the chance to revise that assessment.

Knoots are small, newt-like amphibian humanoids equally adept at swimming and walking. Many possess inherent magical talent. Most are organized into tight clans intrinsically tied to specific stretches of shoreline or river mouths. The clan-crafted items they produce weave utility magic into tools and weapons, and magic is viewed pragmatically—a tool first, a weapon second. This makes its application in battle difficult to predict and harder to counter.

They train giant anoles and salamanders for transport and labor: slow, steady, and surprisingly disciplined creatures that haul harvests, pull sledges through mud, and carry armored riders when necessary. Governance centers on clan elders who coordinate through Brinecoil, but authority is distributed across the clans and rarely contested at the center. Everything they build remains close to the water table. Settlements are heavy and low, integrated into the land rather than imposed on it.

The Tidefen Reach is relatively isolated, characterized by the Murresh Tidelands (flooding twice daily, managed with channels and stone weirs), the Kelthuun Flow (slow, wide river providing fresh water), Shelmire Knuckles (low stone ridges where settlements cluster), and Graveglass Shoals (dangerous offshore areas perfect for fishing platforms and early warning).

The Knoots share borders with humans in the Roaring Wastes and the Old Empire, but due to isolationist nature and difficult terrain, open conflict is rare—instead focusing on mutual avoidance and highly specific, cautious trade arrangements. Interaction with the Crocodylians to the south is minimal, characterized by mutual suspicion and shared preference for reclusive lifestyles.
