Sirexfall

A heavily fortified Sitan gathering site along critical Ardex Wastes migration paths, dedicated to the breeding and training of the Sirex mounts on which Sitan military capacity depends.

Sirexfall is positioned where several critical migration paths converge within the Ardex Wastes, and its function is the breeding and training of the Sirex — the massive eight-legged mounts on which Sitan military capacity substantially depends. It is among the most heavily fortified locations in the Wastes, its fortification reflecting what it protects as much as where it sits.

Unlike Varakh-Duun or Ashkarn Hold, Sirexfall is in continuous use. Clans passing through on seasonal migrations stop here; animals are dropped for training and trained mounts are taken on. The site operates as a waystation built around the specific demands of the Sirex, and the Sitan construction — bone-framed shelters, shaped stone enclosures suited to large animals, open ground for movement — reflects that primary purpose throughout.

The Sirex

The animals bred and trained at Sirexfall are not bred for obedience. The Sitan have never sought to produce a Sirex that follows commands; what they breed for is stamina — the capacity to cross extreme distances across the desert without food or water, matching the Sitan’s own endurance. A rider who loses grip on the reins loses direction entirely: the Sirex determines its own destination from that point, and retrieving it requires finding it rather than recalling it.

Training at Sirexfall is accordingly as much about the rider as the mount. Sitan who come through to take on trained animals are assessed on their grip, their endurance in the saddle, their capacity to maintain control across the full range of conditions the Wastes impose. What a Sirex will not do for an inadequate rider it will sustain through for a capable one. The selection process — which animals suit which riders, which riders are ready for which animals — is managed by those who oversee the site, and has not been described in any external account in useful detail.

Strategic Function

Sirexfall’s fortification reflects its military importance rather than any specific external threat to the site. The Sirex breeding population represents a resource that determines how quickly the Sitan can mount large-scale military action; protecting it is managed as a continuous obligation. The migration path convergence that makes Sirexfall a natural waystation also makes it a natural chokepoint — an approach into the Wastes interior that can be monitored, and if necessary, contested.

Clans moving toward Varakh-Duun for a war muster typically route through Sirexfall. Animals assessed as ready are taken north; those returned from the campaign season are cycled back into the training system.
