Stonewake

Stonewake is the Karuun’s only deliberate opening to the outside world — a lower valley settlement near the Vaelrun River, positioned to allow outside trading parties access without bringing them deeper into Hrethfall. It is designed to be found. Everything beyond it is not.

The Trade

The Khar Crystals extracted from the contested passes of the Khar-Mol Mountains — wrested at irregular intervals from the ongoing conflict with the Sitan Giants over Ancestor’s Threshold — are sold here. The buyers are outside merchants; their specific affiliations vary and Stonewake’s ledgers are not shared with external parties. What is exchanged for the crystals — food stores, raw metals, materials the Karuun cannot produce within Hrethfall in sufficient quantity — reflects the same calculus that drives the mining itself. The Karuun do not trade to accumulate. They trade because they cannot sustain their holds without it.

Most outside parties who reach Stonewake leave with the impression that they understand something of the Karuun. This impression is not entirely wrong, and it is not entirely accidental.

River Watch

The Vaelrun River at Stonewake runs quiet. The Old Empire infrastructure that once managed its flow — stonework still visible along sections of the bank — has not been maintained in generations, and river traffic of any organized kind ceased with the Empire’s collapse. Stonewake watches it anyway. The Karuun account for the possibility that a quiet artery does not remain quiet; the infrastructure is still there for anyone patient enough to restore it. What the watch has observed since the Empire’s fall is not recorded in any source the Chronicle Project has recovered.

Access

Outside parties conducting trade at Stonewake do not go further into Hrethfall. The valley’s geography provides natural limits that the Karuun do not need to supplement with posted restrictions. The trade zone functions as advertised. The settlement beyond it is not a question most visitors have found reason to press.
