The Cloud Breaker Chasm

A massive perpetually wind-swept void in the center of the Shattered Aerie of Veskhari Reach that falls below the cloud line, serving as a waste disposal site and high-risk training zone for high-speed evasion.

The center of Veskhari Reach opens downward in a void whose floor is below the cloud layer — so deep that the lower portion is not visible from the aerie’s occupied elevations under normal conditions. The wind that moves through this void is not the ambient wind of the surrounding aerie. It is something produced by the chasm itself: the temperature differential between the cloud-level air and the upper air, forced through the chasm’s constriction, creates a permanent wind system that Chronicle Project accounts consistently describe as violent by any standard the observers had encountered previously.

“Cloud Breaker” refers to the visible effect at the chasm’s edge: the cloud layer that surrounds the lower aerie is disrupted at this point, broken by the upward air pressure the chasm produces, leaving a gap in the cloud cover directly above the void that is visible from above as a cleared window through which the chasm’s depth can sometimes be seen. The effect is constant and distinctive.

Waste Disposal

The practical function — waste disposal into the void below — uses the chasm’s depth and the wind movement to remove material from the aerie’s inhabited levels efficiently and permanently. The cloud layer at the chasm’s mid-point and the void below it means material released into the chasm does not accumulate at the aerie’s occupied elevations. This is unremarkable as an engineering solution; the Eeeks are noted for pragmatic applications of what their environment provides.

The scale of the chasm makes the disposal function incidentally significant for security: the void’s depth and the wind conditions make retrieving anything released into it essentially impossible. Items that need to be destroyed rather than simply discarded are disposed of at the Cloud Breaker Chasm.

The chasm’s defensive value is passive. Eeeks who know the wind system route around it safely using established flight paths; enemies attempting to cross the void or fly through it without this knowledge encounter the violent, disorienting wind that the chasm produces. No active defensive deployment is required — the chasm does not need to be staffed to be effective as a barrier. The training function and the disposal function occupy the aerie’s relationship with the chasm; the defensive function is simply there, a consequence of the chasm’s physical character rather than a designed system. Chronicle Project accounts of approaches to Veskhari Reach do not describe attempts to cross the chasm directly.

High-Speed Training

The chasm’s wind conditions are extreme enough to constitute a training environment that simulates — or exceeds — the conditions the Eeeks encounter when performing the high-speed evasion maneuvers their doctrine requires. Training in the Cloud Breaker Chasm’s wind system develops the specific flight control capability that the Eeek military’s lightning-fast retreats demand: maintaining directed flight at high speed in conditions that are actively working against directional control.

This is high-risk training in the literal sense. The chasm’s void is not survivable below certain elevations; the wind conditions require constant active control; the training is conducted at heights that allow failure to be corrected before it becomes permanent. Chronicle Project accounts that describe Eeek flight capability note something that is consistent with what this training produces: the agility at speed, the response to turbulence, the ability to maintain formation or break it cleanly. These are not natural abilities. They are learned ones, learned here.
