The Moistworks of Va'sh
A critical community in the Kingdom of K'tharr built around a large permanent water source necessary for sustaining the Piran air cavalry population.
The Piran that constitute the K’tharr Kingdom’s air cavalry are hydrogen-filled flying creatures whose care requirements include water access that the central arid plains of K’tharr territory do not provide everywhere. The Moistworks of Va’sh is the installation built around the permanent water source that the Piran population’s sustenance requires. Its strategic importance is directly proportional to the Piran’s strategic importance — which is to say, substantial.
The Piran are the K’tharr’s most significant military asset and simultaneously one of their most dangerous liabilities: should a handler be incapacitated during engagement, the Piran reverts to a primal hunting state and attacks the nearest living organisms. The air force that makes Ch’kkra effectively unassailable from above and that provides the K’tharr with tactical capability no ground-based opponent can match is also the thing that can turn on its own side under specific conditions. Sustaining the Piran population, keeping the handler-mount bonds intact, and maintaining the water supply that Piran physiology requires are prerequisites for the air cavalry’s existence as a controlled military asset.
Water Infrastructure
The “Moistworks” designation refers to the water management infrastructure at Va’sh — the channels, storage systems, and distribution mechanisms that take a permanent water source and convert it into the reliable supply the Piran population needs. In the arid plains where the installation exists, this infrastructure is not supplementary; it is the reason the installation can exist where it does and the reason the Piran population can be concentrated here rather than distributed across smaller water sources across the kingdom.
Chronicle Project accounts that describe the K’tharr Kingdom’s military capacity identify the Moistworks as a strategic vulnerability as well as a strategic asset: a permanent water source is a fixed installation that cannot be moved, and a fixed installation in an otherwise arid environment is identifiable. The K’tharr’s response to this — the defensive infrastructure around Va’sh — is described as substantial in outside accounts without being detailed.
The defense at Va’sh is not purely ground-based. Piran are stationed at the Moistworks — the installation that provides the water their physiology requires is also the installation their handlers defend. The arrangement is self-reinforcing: Piran guarding their own water supply are defending from a position they will not abandon while the supply exists. Droma-Akt ground forces supplement this aerial defensive layer, providing the close-quarters coverage that Piran volatility makes complicated when handlers are at risk. The combination of aerial and ground defense at a fixed strategic installation reflects K’tharr military doctrine applied to the Moistworks’ specific vulnerability profile.
Handler Community
The specialized knowledge of Piran handling — maintaining the bonds, managing the volatile behavior triggers, conducting the air cavalry operations that the Piran’s capabilities make possible — is held by a specific community at Va’sh. Handlers who lose their Piran through handler incapacitation are not simply soldiers without mounts; they are practitioners of a specific skill that requires a new bonded Piran to remain useful to the K’tharr air cavalry. The community at Va’sh maintains this skill and the animal population that makes its practice possible.
