A critical settlement in the Tidefen Reach of Korrashal controlling the water-gates that regulate coastal flooding, kept under heavy guard due to its strategic importance.

The tidal flat flooding that makes Korrashal both productive and defensible is not entirely natural in its current form. The Knoots have built water-gate systems — weirs and regulated channels that control where flooding goes, how deep it goes, and when it recedes — that shape the tidal flat behavior in ways that serve the territory’s food production and its defense. Thossam Weirhold is the installation that controls these gates: the settlement built around the water-management infrastructure, staffed by the engineers who maintain it, and guarded at a level consistent with what losing control of the gates would mean.

Losing control of the water-gates would mean losing control of the flooding patterns that Vellisk Reach’s algae cultivation depends on, losing the defensive flooding that makes the tidal flat approaches impassable for outside forces at certain tide states, and losing the water management that sustains the Kelthuun Flow’s fresh water contribution to the coastal system. Thossam Weirhold is heavily guarded because it controls something more fundamental than its own territory: it controls the conditions that make the Tidefen Reach function.

Weir Engineering

The water-gate system is Knoot engineering integrated into the tidal flat terrain over an extended period. The weirs — barriers with regulated openings that can be adjusted to control water flow — are built from the shell-stone material that the tidal flats provide and are positioned at the points in the channel system where control has the most downstream effect. Chronicle Project accounts that describe the coastal engineering of Korrashal note its sophistication without being able to describe the specific mechanisms; the construction looks organic to outside observers who do not recognize it as constructed.

The adjustment of the water-gates is a technical operation requiring the knowledge that the Thossam Weirhold community holds. The gates respond to seasonal conditions — flood predictions, storm approach patterns, the coordination with Vellisk Reach’s cultivation needs — and maintaining the system’s proper operation is continuous rather than occasional work.

Thossam Weirhold does serve an offensive water function, though the Knoots do not document it as such in sources the Chronicle Project has accessed. The water-gate system that regulates normal flooding can, under conditions the Weirhold engineers control, be used to flood specific approach corridors at a rate and volume beyond what tide patterns alone produce. An invading force moving through a tidal flat approach that suddenly fills faster than expected, through channels that did not previously present a submersion risk, is an invading force that has encountered the Weirhold’s offensive capability without having identified it as such in advance. The Chronicle Project’s inference of this function comes from accounts of failed approaches to Korrashal that describe flooding conditions inconsistent with known tide patterns for the relevant season — accounts that do not attribute the flooding to gate manipulation, but from which gate manipulation is the most coherent explanation.

Guard Character

The heavy guard at Thossam Weirhold reflects the same calculus that produces heavy guard at strategic installations throughout the territories of Thrapsus: the value of controlling the installation is proportional to the value of what the installation controls. The Knoots who guard the Weirhold are the same kind of fighters that Korrashal produces generally — small, amphibious, magic-capable, with comprehensive knowledge of the local terrain — operating in defense of an installation whose loss would be more damaging than losing any number of conventional fortifications.

Outside parties attempting to assess Thossam Weirhold’s defensive capability from its physical appearance would consistently reach incorrect conclusions.
