Turtlelians
Shell-armored reptilians who move slowly and speak carefully, deliberately pursuing chosen courses of action with unbreakable determination. The Long Feud with the Saurian Empire defines their identity.
The Turtlelians are defined by a single, unfinished matter: the Long Feud with the Saurian Empire. Every border skirmish, every council deliberation, every generation of warriors trained in the March traces back to the Breaking of Ternosk Ford—the day a Saurian cohort deliberately diverted the Rhel Basin Flow to flood a Turtlelian burial ground and crush sacred shell-vaults. The Saurians claimed military necessity. The Turtlelians defined it as desecration. No formal apology was ever offered, and none would be accepted now.
Turtlelians are broad-shelled, thick-limbed humanoids, standing well taller than humans and naturally armored from birth. They move slowly, speak carefully, and rarely act without extensive discussion. Outsiders consistently mistake this deliberate pace for hesitation. It is not. Once a Turtlelian clan decides on a course of action, they pursue it with unbreakable determination, regardless of the cost. They possess the patience to wait centuries to achieve a goal. As long as Saurian banners fly near the Rhel Basin, the matter is unfinished.
Governance is by clan council. Deliberation often takes days to reach decisions other races would settle in minutes. This pace frustrates allies and enemies alike, but it ensures total commitment once a path is chosen. The culture is centered on endurance and memory—traits the Long Feud has sharpened into identity rather than burden.
Military doctrine emphasizes measured, inexorable advance. Locked shield phalanxes wear enemies down through sheer resilience and overwhelming defensive power. Natural shell armor is supplemented with reinforced shields and durable padding harvested from Karnath Reedwoods. Turtlelians do not chase retreating enemies. They wait for the next mistake.
Settlements are inherently heavy and permanent—built from stone and shell to endure sieges and the passage of time rather than avoid conflict. The land where Turtlelians dwell is defined by the contrast of slow-moving water and immutable hard ground: the Rhel Basin Flow, the Karnath Reedwoods, and the Taloros Wetstone Hills all shape their existence.
