Session 24 — March 8, 2026
Summary
Continued Layer 4. Wrote the presentation page. Explored suit+rank vs. rank-only for the reaction table and locked rank-only. Session 0 emerged as a new design insight and became its own section. The Menu was locked as the core progression mechanic.
✅ Locked: Presentation Reaction Table (Rank-Only)
The reaction table uses rank only (A through K, 13 results). One flip, one result. Suit is not used.
Previous vault-knowledge described this as “suit = emotional register, rank = specific reaction” — that is now overridden. The rank-only approach is shorter, punchier, and better fits the section’s identity as the game’s closing beat.
| Rank | Client Reaction |
|---|---|
| A | Speechless. Long pause. Then: slow clap. |
| 2 | Takes a bite. Chews for a very long time. Says nothing. |
| 3 | Confused. Picks it up, turns it sideways. “Is this… intentional?“ |
| 4 | Politely horrified. Smiles through clenched teeth. |
| 5 | Hates one thing specifically. Will not let it go. |
| 6 | Genuinely impressed by one detail. Completely ignores the rest. |
| 7 | Has questions. Many questions. All unanswerable. |
| 8 | Loves it. Already planning to book you again. |
| 9 | This dish reminded them of something. They’re crying a little. |
| 10 | The wrong person tried it first. Their reaction is the one that counts now. |
| J | Hates it personally — but everyone else at the event disagrees loudly. |
| Q | Loves it so much they want to name it after themselves. |
| K | On the spot, offers to hire one of your team away from you. |
✅ Locked: Session 0 as Its Own Zine Section
Session 0 is optional pre-play. It sits between the Game Loop and Character Creation in the zine.
Three beats:
- Name Your Restaurant — two card flips (red/black + rank), one for name, one for tagline. Results written on an index card that stays on the table every session.
- Draw Your Restaurant — sketch the exterior. Hang the sign.
- Create Your Characters — three card flips per player (class, personality, calling). One sentence of backstory rooted in the calling.
Session 0 can be ten minutes or an hour. Both are correct.
✅ Locked: The Menu as Core Progression Mechanic
The restaurant’s history is its dish list. After every session, any dish the group loved gets a name and goes on the menu. The menu starts empty. It grows with play.
This is the through-line across sessions. Not stats, not unlocks — just the accumulated story of what the restaurant has made.
✅ Locked: Restaurant Name & Tagline Tables
Red/black + rank = 26 options per table. Two flips total for Session 0 restaurant creation.
Full tables captured in session-0.md.
Captured Session 24 — March 8, 2026. Layer 4 continues.
Session 25 — March 8, 2026
Summary
Continued Layer 4. Wrote all four Job Creation tables and both Exploration encounter tables. Locked the world system for job creation. Locked the Location card as the exploration anchor.
✅ Locked: Job Creation World System
Flip 1’s suit sets the world for the entire session. All subsequent flips (2–4) use rank only in that world’s column.
| Suit | World |
|---|---|
| ♥ Hearts | Block World — Lego, Minecraft, Playmobil |
| ♦ Diamonds | Plush World — stuffed animals, toys |
| ♣ Clubs | Pocket World — tiny scale, bug-sized, button-sized |
| ♠ Spades | Wild World — open-ended, anything goes |
This resolves the tension between “world-specific tables” and “world-agnostic tables.” The world is set once (Flip 1) and never revisited. Every other flip is just rank.
✅ Locked: Exploration — Red/Black Split (Organic vs. Inorganic)
Inspired by Colostle’s card mechanic. Red and black do not mean good and bad — they mean organic and inorganic.
- Red card = something living. Suit = disposition. ♥ Hearts = friendly/open. ♦ Diamonds = unfriendly/guarded.
- Black card = something built or constructed. Suit = condition. ♠ Spades = thriving/active. ♣ Clubs = ruined/broken/abandoned.
- Rank = encounter type (same across both tables — 13 options each).
✅ Locked: Location Card as Exploration Anchor
Before the first exploration flip, the group looks at the Location card from job creation. That is the space where all exploration takes place. Encounter flips are interpreted through that location.
This resolves the “disjointed encounter” problem — a lone traveler, a crowd, and a gate in sequence felt like three different movies. With the location as anchor, all three exist in the same place. Players interpret, not just read.
The permission is built into the rules: “If something doesn’t fit, make it fit. That’s the job.”
Captured Session 25 — March 8, 2026. Job Creation and Exploration complete. Cooking is next.
Session 26 — March 8, 2026
Summary
Locked cooking. Designed the cooking table structure from scratch — rethought suit categories, landed on the exploration pattern (red/black split, suit as modifier). Wrote both cooking tables and the misc tables section.
✅ Locked: Cooking Table Structure (Red/Black Split)
Cooking uses the same structural pattern as exploration — red/black is the primary split, suit within color is the modifier.
- Red card = something edible. An ingredient or component that goes in or on the dish.
- Black card = something presentational. A finish or frame that changes how the dish reads.
- Rank = specific prompt (13 options per color table).
Suit within color = how prominently to draw it:
- ♥ Hearts — abundant. A lot of it.
- ♦ Diamonds — just a trace.
- ♠ Spades — dramatic. Front and center.
- ♣ Clubs — understated. Barely there.
“Technique” was considered and rejected — not drawable in 30 seconds. “Sauce” was considered and rejected in favor of this structure, which handles sauce naturally as a red or black prompt depending on context.
✅ Locked: Misc Tables (Dish Name Generator + Complication Table)
Two optional tables. Both use the red/black split with 13 rank rows.
Dish Name Generator — Red = humble and warm. Black = formal and considered. One flip after cooking to name the dish for the menu.
Complication Table — Red = something goes wrong with a person. Black = something goes wrong with a thing or situation. Use in any phase when the group wants the universe to decide what goes sideways.
Item/loot, encounter builder, and ingredient generator from the original Layer 3 brief are redundant — the core tables already cover this ground.
Captured Session 26 — March 8, 2026. Cooking locked. Misc tables written. Ready for playtesting.
Session 27 — March 8, 2026
Summary
Holistic doc critique session. Identified gaps across the full document set. Fixed four minor issues immediately. Designed and locked the Countdown mechanic, resolving the missing exploration flip count.
✅ Locked: Class as Narrative Lens (Player-Facing)
Added explicit statement to character-creation.md directly under the class table: class is a narrative lens, not a mechanical modifier. A Baker and a Griller play identically — class tells you how your character sees the world.
✅ Locked: Solo Guidance in Cooking
Added to cooking.md: playing solo, take three flips. The dish works exactly the same — all from one hand.
✅ Locked: Deck Management
Added “The Deck” paragraph to game-loop.md. One standard deck, shuffled, used for every flip in the session. Reshuffle when it runs out. Drawing the same card twice is fine.
✅ Locked: Countdown — Flip 5 of Job Creation
A fifth flip added to job creation. Rank banded — not raw rank, not suit.
| Rank | Exploration Flips |
|---|---|
| A – 3 | 5 |
| 4 – 6 | 7 |
| 7 – 9 | 9 |
| 10 – K | 11 |
- Named Countdown — what you do at the table is count down from the number
- Written on the index card alongside Client, Event, Location, Tone
- Referenced in
exploration.mdas the flip limit: “Cross one off with each encounter” - Suit rejected as the mechanism — existing suit meanings (warm/abundant, restrained, etc.) conflicted with any fixed mapping to session length
- Raw rank rejected — A=1 and K=13 are both wrong for a 45-minute session
- Rank banded chosen: four distinct lengths, no suit conflict, playtesting anchor of 8 sits in the 7–9 band
Files created/updated: job-countdown.md (new), job-creation.md, exploration.md, introduction.md, game-loop.md, vault-knowledge.md
🔲 Open: Exploration → Cooking Connection
introduction.md still contains: “The ingredients gathered during exploration become cooking card flips.” This is inaccurate — cooking always uses one flip per player regardless of exploration. Decision deferred. Will address in a future session.
Captured Session 27 — March 8, 2026. Countdown locked. Exploration flip count resolved.
