Ashkel Verge
A volcanic settlement at the edge of the Saurian Empire's interior uplands, supplying arms, armored mounts, and raw materials for Imperial military operations.
The volcanic ground at the Saurian Empire’s interior edge provides the heat and pressure that Ashkel Verge runs on. The settlement sits at what Imperial accounts describe as the “verge” — the boundary between the deep jungle interior and the volcanic upland zone, where the ground hardens from rich forest soil to basalt and the temperatures that allow industrial metalworking without the elaborate infrastructure that cooler climates require. Proximity to The Screaming Caves is not incidental. The geothermal network beneath both locations is the shared resource that makes each possible.
Ashkel Verge is primarily an industrial and logistical installation rather than a population center. It produces arms for Imperial forces, provides staging and rearing capacity for the armored mounts that Saurian military units deploy, and processes the raw materials — bone, mineral, geothermally extracted metals — that supply Imperial craftwork elsewhere.
Arms Production
The forges at Ashkel Verge operate using volcanic heat channeled through constructed conduits from the geothermal sources in the surrounding upland. The efficiency of this arrangement over conventional charcoal-fired forge work is considerable, and the Saurian Empire’s arms production capacity at Ashkel Verge reflects it. Chronicle Project sources that address Imperial military equipment consistently describe it as well-maintained and well-supplied — logistics that require a production center of significant throughput to sustain.
Zard craftspeople manage the detailed work — the fitting of armor components, the finishing of edged weapons, the assembly of the specialized equipment that Saurian officers and front-line troops carry. Saurian supervisors manage the production priorities, which are set based on requisitions from Xhotl-Kar. The division of labor follows the established pattern of Imperial organization.
Mount Rearing and Staging
Ashkel Verge maintains the largest concentration of armored Krak and combat-rated mounts in the eastern Empire sector — the creatures that Saurian military units ride in formation. The volcanic terrain, while difficult for most creatures, suits the reptilian biology of the creatures the Empire domesticates.
Rearing operations require significant space and specific environmental conditions that the volcanic upland provides. The settlement extends further than its built structures suggest — the mount rearing areas are distributed across the surrounding terrain rather than concentrated in a single location, which reduces the risk of disease spreading through the population and makes the rearing areas harder to target in a single strike.
Connection to the Screaming Caves
The Screaming Caves are located near Ashkel Verge, and the two locations are functionally connected. The geothermal vents that produce the Caves’ characteristic sounds are part of the same volcanic system that Ashkel Verge taps for forge heat. Saurian shamans who use the Caves for spirit rites and military preparation are not separated from the industrial operations at the Verge by great distance.
Whether the proximity of religious and industrial functions within the same geothermal landscape is a product of deliberate site selection or historical accident is not addressed in available sources. The effect — that the Empire’s arms production and its shamanistic practice share a landscape — is consistent with the Seraphate of Xhotl’s integration of religious and political authority. What is sacred and what is practical are not always separated in Imperial organization.
