Emberfall Hold
The capital of Karskaro and the largest of its Cinder-Holds, built into the volcanic rock of the Cinderfang Range and seat of the Hearth-Keepers' council.
Emberfall Hold is the capital of Karskaro and the largest of its Cinder-Holds — a class of settlement unique to the Turquoise Orcs, built into the volcanic rock of the Cinderfang Range rather than upon it. Where most capitals announce themselves at a distance, Emberfall Hold is best understood from within: its streets descend into the mountain’s living warmth, its walls are the mountain’s walls, and the heat that makes the forge-districts possible is the same heat the settlement was built to contain and direct.
Population estimates place Emberfall Hold among the larger permanent settlements in its part of Thrapsus, though precise figures are not available in sources outside Karskaro. The population is predominantly Turquoise Orc, with a small but established presence of Gloomreach trade representatives in the designated outer quarters.
A Cinder-Hold is a settlement built into stable volcanic rock formations, using geothermal heat as both structural feature and practical resource — the mountain’s warmth integrated into the settlement’s function rather than managed against. The definition holds as written.
The Cinder-Hold Form
The Cinder-Hold is the defining architectural form of Karskaro settlement. Each Hold is built into a stable volcanic formation — sites where the rock is old and dense enough to be carved reliably but close enough to geothermal activity to remain warm. The outer face of a Cinder-Hold presents as a carved cliff face, its entrance passages widened from natural vents and fissures over generations. Interior chambers are sealed against ashfall and steam rather than cold.
Emberfall Hold is the largest of these in extent and depth. Outer chambers handle commerce and external contact; the deeper administrative core is accessible only to clan representatives and Hearth-Keepers. How far the settlement extends below the public levels is not established in sources available to the Chronicle Project.
The Hearth-Keepers’ Council
The governing body of Karskaro is not a single ruler but a council of Hearth-Keepers — the senior clan matriarchs who manage land use, forging rights, and dispute resolution across the territory. Emberfall Hold is where this council convenes, and the chamber in which it meets — the Ashcircle, by the term used in the few accounts that reference it — is positioned near the volcanic heart of the settlement.
The council convenes when disputes reach a scale that individual Hearth-Keepers cannot resolve locally, when major forging allocations require coordination, or when external threats require a coordinated territorial response. Its proceedings are not published. Decisions emerge as directives distributed to clan Hearth-Keepers through established channels. The council’s deliberative process — how weight is distributed between clan representatives, whether consensus is required or majority sufficient — is not described in any outside source.
The Flame-Weaver Sanctum
Flame-Weavers, the shamans whose reading of lava flows and ashfall patterns informs Karskaro policy, maintain their largest and most senior congregation within Emberfall Hold. The sanctum’s exact location within the Hold is not consistently identified in accounts that reference it — some place it adjacent to the council chamber, others suggest it occupies the deepest accessible volcanic vent. Whether this discrepancy reflects genuine uncertainty or deliberate misdirection in the accounts is not determinable.
What is established: Flame-Weaver guidance is not merely ceremonial. Before the Hearth-Keepers’ Council convenes on significant matters, accounts consistently note a period during which Flame-Weavers conduct observances. Council directives are issued after, not before, this period. The relationship between the readings and the decisions is not described externally.
The Forge Quarters
A significant portion of Emberfall Hold’s activity is industrial. The Hold’s deepest accessible volcanic vents feed forge operations that, while smaller than the dedicated complex at Vaskrud Delve, produce specialized goods — ceremonial weapons, clan-marking armor, structural components for the Hold’s own expansion — kept within Karskaro rather than traded outward.
The distinction between Emberfall Hold’s forge production and Vaskrud Delve’s is largely one of purpose: Vaskrud Delve produces for external trade and territorial supply; Emberfall Hold’s forges produce for the capital and the council. Goods bearing the mark of the Hold’s forge quarters are not sold to outside buyers.
External Relations
The outer districts of Emberfall Hold accommodate a small permanent population of Gloomreach trade representatives — the physical presence of the alliance between the two territories. Their quarter is functional and separate; the few outside accounts that reach Emberfall Hold describe it as positioned at the settlement’s entrance, the first interior space visible upon entry and the furthest from the administrative core. The Gloomreach representatives have not, in any documented account, been received in the deeper sections of the Hold.
No other external presence is established in Emberfall Hold in sources available to the Chronicle Project.
