The Gloomreach defines a harsh, broken edge of the continent — jagged ridges and volcanic stone giving way to deep ravines and perpetually shadowed valleys. This is the dominion of the Giant Trolls, who stand well over ten feet tall and are built entirely for crushing force rather than speed or finesse.

The Gloomreach’s economy is raiding, and its foreign policy is mercenary work. Both are conducted with a reliability that surprises those who expect brute force to be erratic. The Trolls fight hard, hold to their contracts, and withdraw when payment is secured. Betrayal is rare not because of inherent honor but because it damages future earnings. The Gloomreach endures because being predictably dangerous is more profitable than being unpredictably violent.

Geography

The topography of the Gloomreach limits daylight and shapes all Troll activity around that fact:

  • Darkfold Ravines: Deep channels where little to no direct sunlight reaches even at high noon. Primary Troll habitation zones.
  • Skarthane Bluffs: Natural fortifications overlooking crucial trade paths, providing ideal ambush points and lookouts.
  • Umbergrowth: Sparse forests of twisted blackwood clinging to sheltered slopes, offering vital cover for daylight lairs and hidden camps.
  • The Searing Flats: A high plateau of exposed pale rock near the volcanic border. Intense reflected sunlight and heat make it avoided by Trolls during the day — a natural neutral zone between the Gloomreach and Karskaro territory.
  • Gloomwater Marsh: A low-lying stagnant marsh fed by runoff from the bluffs. Perpetual fog makes it a favored transit route for Troll scouting parties, operable even near dawn or dusk.

While Giant Trolls do not petrify in daylight, bright sunlight dulls their senses and makes them highly irritable and aggressive. Almost all Troll planning, movement, and fighting happens under cover of darkness.

Political Structure

Troll society is organized around a simple metric: strength and proven success in raiding. A powerful Giant Troll leader — a Warlord or Chieftain — gathers lesser Trolls under direct control. These clans operate within a functional hierarchy where might makes right. The structure is unstable by nature; clans consolidate under strong leaders and fragment when those leaders fall.

Raiding forms the primary economy. Trade comes second, used to acquire goods they cannot easily steal. Farming is non-existent.

Military Doctrine

The Troll military doctrine emphasizes brute force, night assaults, and opportunistic raiding. They frequently coordinate with Karskaro Orc warbands: the Trolls supply nocturnal combat expertise and massive brute force; the Karskaro supply forged goods and food stocks. The relationship is entirely practical and has proven durable precisely because both sides benefit.

When the night in the Gloomreach grows unnaturally quiet, observers have learned to treat this as a reliable indicator that a large-scale coordinated operation is being planned.

Neighbors and Enemies

  • Karskaro Orcs (South): The alliance of convenience. Volcanic homeland borders the Gloomreach. Both societies understand siegecraft, patience, and the effective use of fear in warfare. The relationship holds as long as it remains profitable.
  • General outlook: As long as Thrapsus remains politically fractured and unstable, the Gloomreach will continue to be well-supplied through predation and contract work. Stability is the threat, not war.

Notable Settlements and Points of Interest

  • Bruthel-Gloam (Capital): A massive cliff-hold carved into the Darkfold Ravines, serving as the hub for war councils, mercenary contract negotiations, and division of spoils.
  • Nightcrag: A forward stronghold watching the passes toward Karskaro lands, monitoring activity continuously.
  • Skulk Hollow: A settlement within a ravine dedicated to training night-raiders and ambush specialists. The specific techniques taught here are not documented in Chronicle Project records.
  • Goremark: A trade den where Karskaro Orc caravans safely exchange food stocks and manufactured arms for loot, captives, and raw materials. The only location in the Gloomreach where outside parties operate with reasonable expectation of safe conduct.
  • Deepthrum: A breeding and mustering pit for gathering and organizing lesser Trolls before major campaigns.
