Giant Trolls
Towering nocturnal raiders and mercenaries standing over ten feet tall, defined by brutal strength and surprising reliability as contractors—predictably dangerous is more profitable than unpredictably violent.
The Giant Trolls of the Gloomreach stand well over ten feet tall, built entirely for crushing force rather than speed or finesse. They are raiders and mercenaries — and they are reliable in both roles in ways that confound outside expectations. The Gloomreach’s economy rests on raiding, and its foreign policy is mercenary work. Both are conducted with a reliability that surprises those who expect brute force to be erratic. Trolls fight hard, hold to their contracts, and withdraw when payment is secured. Betrayal is rare not because of inherent honor but because it damages future earnings. The Gloomreach endures because being predictably dangerous is more profitable than being unpredictably violent.
The Gloomreach’s topography shapes all Troll activity. Deep ravines called Darkfold limit daylight and provide primary habitation zones. The Searing Flats — a high plateau of exposed pale rock near volcanic borders — are avoided by Trolls during the day; bright sunlight dulls their senses and makes them highly irritable and aggressive. Almost all Troll planning, movement, and fighting happens under cover of darkness.
Troll society is organized around a simple metric: strength and proven success in raiding. Powerful leaders — Warlords or Chieftains — gather lesser Trolls under direct control in clan structures. These hierarchies are unstable by nature; clans consolidate under strong leaders and fragment when those leaders fall. Raiding forms the primary economy. Trade comes second, used to acquire goods they cannot easily steal. Farming is non-existent.
Military doctrine emphasizes brute force, night assaults, and opportunistic raiding. They frequently coordinate with Karskaro Orcs in a relationship that is entirely practical but has proven durable: the Trolls supply nocturnal combat expertise and massive brute force; the Karskaro supply forged goods and food stocks. When the night in the Gloomreach grows unnaturally quiet, observers have learned to treat this as a reliable indicator that a large-scale coordinated operation is being planned.
The Gloomreach operates under a strategic principle that stability is the threat, not war. As long as Thrapsus remains politically fractured and unstable, the Gloomreach will continue to be well-supplied through predation and contract work. A continent at peace is a continent with no need for mercenaries.
