Mouslings

Once a vast unified empire, the Mouse Empire fell to internal deceit and now fragments into roughly 100 tiny but vicious kingdoms in perpetual conflict, unified only by frequent wars with the Frog Folk.

Once a vast domain, the Mouse Empire fell due to internal deceit and noble skullduggery, ushering in an era known as the Dark Ages. Now, the land remains the “Mouse Empire” only in name—a patchwork of roughly 100 tiny but vicious Mouseling kingdoms. These sovereign states constantly fight over grain, borders, and ancient betrayals, with only frequent wars with the Frog Folk to the east offering fleeting moments of unity.

Mouselings are small, fast, and aggressively resilient. They rely on numbers, traps, narrow terrain, and relentless pressure. They wear light cloth, padded, or chainmail armor, favoring scaled spears and bows. Giant Opossum cavalry and Battle Cats provide military support, alongside specialized wizards. The Empire no longer seeks outward conquest—it endures through perpetual internal conflict, a process best described as grinding. Every internal war sharpens survival instincts and ensures constant tactical readiness.

Outsiders consistently underestimate Mouslings due to their size and fragmented nature. This is a strategic error that Mouseling armies exploit with regularity. They are feared by farmers but dismissed by nobles—a notion that usually ends badly for the larger races. Hated by Orcs and Goblin-kind who view them as prey, Mouselings have turned this predatory assessment into an advantage through ruthless efficiency.

Geography spreads across fertile open meadows, dense hedgerow forests, and low wooded hills—ideal farming land for those strong enough to hold it. The Bristlewind Meadows represent the contested heartland, the Sneckroot Thicket provides ambush-laden terrain, and the Skitterflow River functions as the primary trade route and perpetual battlefield.

Primary external conflicts are with the Frog Folk (constant border wars and skirmishes), Pig-Faced Orcs (frequent raids), and Goblins and Hobgoblins (common incursions). The Mouse Empire operates in a region generally ignored by larger human and dwarven powers, primarily due to small stature and contested, low-value terrain—a strategic obscurity that works to their advantage.
