Skittercross
A major trade and caravan hub at the shallowest and most guarded crossing of the Murkflow River in the Gnawlands of Vrekshaal.
The Murkflow River that runs along the eastern edge of Vrekshaal is both a resource boundary and a conflict axis: the Saurian Empire contests the mineral-rich banks with the Ratogs, and the river’s salt deposits, fresh water access, and subterranean fungus beds are the specific resources the conflict is over. Skittercross sits at the point where the river is most reliably shallow enough to cross with loaded cargo — not the safest position in Vrekshaal’s strategic geography, but the most commercially necessary, which makes the same point differently.
The settlement’s name records its character: movement converges here, crosses here, and disperses again. Caravans from Vrekshaal’s interior reach the river at Skittercross; goods from outside the enclave arrive here; the Ratog traders and intermediaries who manage the enclave’s commercial relationships operate from here. In a society whose governing philosophy holds that everything has value and nothing should be wasted, commerce that converts resources into other resources is understood as a necessary function rather than a secondary one.
The Crossing
The physical crossing at Skittercross is controlled — shallow ford sections that are passable under normal conditions, with the infrastructure for moving cargo and animals across safely, and the observation positions that allow the settlement to monitor what is approaching from the Saurian side of the river. Given that the Saurian Empire treats the Murkflow as a contested zone and that treaties between the two sides fail quickly and consistently, the crossing infrastructure is also the crossing defense.
Chronicle Project accounts that describe Skittercross note its dual character: commercially active enough that trade from multiple sources moves through it, and militarily vigilant enough that the commercial activity does not compromise the crossing’s defensive function. The Ratogs who operate the crossing are aware that it is a natural target for Saurian pressure and have built accordingly.
Trade at Skittercross is conducted exclusively with non-Saurian parties. The conflict over the Murkflow’s mineral banks and resources is not the kind that produces parallel commercial arrangements with the same party pressing military force across the river. Saurian Empire merchants do not appear at the crossing; any goods with Saurian origin that move through Skittercross arrive through third-party traders rather than direct exchange. The Ratog resource philosophy accommodates commercial pragmatism at many points, but Saurian direct trade at the frontier crossing the Empire actively contests is not one of them.
Information Hub
Caravans bring information as well as goods. Skittercross, as the point where outside traffic arrives, is the settlement where King Ray-Gon’s government receives its earliest information about conditions outside Vrekshaal — what is moving through the surrounding territories, what the Saurian Empire has been doing in the contested river zone, and what any of the enclave’s other neighbors have been doing that is visible to trade traffic. The commercial hub and the intelligence function are not separate operations at Skittercross. They occur in the same place through the same activity.
