Sovereign's Carapace
A wealthy agricultural district in the Kingdom of K'tharr responsible for cultivating essential fungi and managing livestock, strictly controlled by the Sovereign Caste.
Food production in the K’tharr Kingdom is not distributed across the population as an independent activity. The Sovereign Caste controls agricultural production strictly, and Sovereign’s Carapace is the center of this control: the agricultural district where the essential fungi cultivation and the livestock management that feed both Sovereign and Droma-Akt populations are conducted under Sovereign authority.
The name references the Sovereign Caste’s physical characteristic — the natural carapace armor that makes them formidable in combat — applied to the territory rather than to an individual. “Sovereign’s Carapace” is, in the naming’s implication, the shell that protects the kingdom’s food supply, and the protection is exercised through ownership and control rather than through walls. Chronicle Project accounts that describe K’tharr political economy note the agricultural district’s function as one of the clearest expressions of the caste system’s practical operation: the population that produces the food is not the population that controls the food.
Fungal Cultivation
The fungi cultivated at Sovereign’s Carapace are essential to K’tharr food production in the way that fungi are essential across many underground or semi-arid insectoid cultures: productive in conditions where other food sources are not reliable, not dependent on the water availability that open-field agriculture requires, and capable of being managed at the density the kingdom’s population demands. The specific varieties cultivated and the cultivation methods employed are not described in detail in available sources.
What is described: the quality differential between the agricultural output available to the Sovereign Caste and the output available to the Droma-Akt is, according to Chronicle Project accounts that describe K’tharr social conditions, significant. The Sovereign Caste’s strict control of the district is the mechanism that maintains this differential.
The Droma-Akt maintain marginal independent production — household gardens and small personal plots exist in the settlement areas where the Droma-Akt population is concentrated. These produce supplementary quantity but are not sufficient to constitute independence from Sovereign’s Carapace’s controlled output. The food supply of the Droma-Akt is fundamentally dependent on Sovereign allocation; the household production supplements the allocation rather than replacing any portion of it. Chronicle Project accounts that describe K’tharr social conditions note the small plots without characterizing them as meaningful economic independence — their presence is acknowledged, their significance is not.
Livestock Management
The Krak and Drune used throughout the kingdom for transport, military application, and cargo handling require sustenance and breeding management. Sovereign’s Carapace includes the livestock operations that maintain the populations of these creatures at the levels the kingdom’s operational needs require. The Piran population at the Moistworks of Va’sh represents a separate specialized population; Sovereign’s Carapace handles the more broadly used creatures that move through the kingdom’s daily operations.
The wealth designation — “wealthy agricultural district” in the accounts that describe it — reflects the concentration of both the kingdom’s food supply and its creature supply at a single Sovereign-controlled installation. The district’s wealth is, in practice, the Sovereign Caste’s extracted portion of it.
