Kelar Ashstead
The agricultural center of Karskaro, positioned on the Ashreach Plains where volcanic soil and pervasive geothermal heat enable year-round cultivation of crops grown nowhere else on the continent.
Kelar Ashstead is the agricultural center of Karskaro, positioned on the Ashreach Plains where the volcanic soil is deepest and the geothermal heat most consistently distributed. Most of what the territory eats is produced or coordinated from here. Most of what leaves Karskaro as food — the grain and root stocks that form the Karskaro contribution to the alliance with the Gloomreach Dominion — passes through Kelar Ashstead before departure.
The settlement itself is less a city than a network of dispersed farmsteads organized around a central administrative and storage core. The surrounding farmland extends far enough that the outer edge is not visible from the central district on days when ashfall is light. On days when it is not, it is not visible regardless.
The Ashreach Soil
The Ashreach Plains owe their agricultural viability entirely to the volcanic system beneath them. Mineral-rich ash deposits from the Cinderfang Range have accumulated in the lowland basin over an extended geological period, producing a soil of exceptional fertility and unusual chemical composition. Crops grown in it absorb minerals that crops grown in conventional soil do not encounter — which is why Ash-Grains and Flare-Roots, cultivated nowhere else on the continent in quantity, develop characteristics not replicated outside the Plains.
The geothermal warmth permeating the soil from below extends the effective growing season indefinitely. Kelar Ashstead does not experience seasonal agricultural cycles in the conventional sense. Rotation is managed by the Hearth-Keeper governing the settlement based on soil readings and yield tracking rather than calendar. Fields rest when they need to rest, not when the season turns.
Staple Crops
The primary surface crops are Ash-Grains — a dense, slow-burning grain that dries well and sustains sustained physical labor — and Flare-Roots, a tuber whose interior flesh retains heat long after cooking and which keeps without refrigeration in conditions other foods would not. Both crops require volcanic soil and are largely unknown outside Karskaro territory.
The Gloomreach Trolls receive both in significant quantity. Their nocturnal lifestyle suits the heat-retaining properties of Flare-Roots in particular; the practical value of food that does not require reheating during a long night’s operational tempo has been noted in Chronicle Project accounts relaying Gloomreach trade negotiations.
Cave fungi — grown in the geothermally heated cavern systems beneath the settlement — supplement the surface harvest and provide a crop that weather-related ashfall events cannot disrupt. The cave cultivation is the responsibility of specialist clans whose knowledge of underground growing conditions is maintained internally.
Land Use and Governance
The Hearth-Keeper of Kelar Ashstead manages land allocation, planting rotation, water distribution from the few reliable surface sources on the Plains, and the supply of Magma-Bound farming tools received from Vaskrud Delve. Disputes over field boundaries and water access are the most common cases brought before her — and, by the settlement’s accounts, the most consistently resolved. The Hearth-Keeper system functions most visibly when the stakes are tangible and local.
Storage capacity at Kelar Ashstead is significant relative to its residential population. The surplus represents both the buffer against poor growing cycles and the trade stocks maintained for Gloomreach deliveries. Storage facilities are built into the stable volcanic rock at the settlement’s edge, where the temperature is controlled by the same geothermal system that heats the soil above.
Position in Karskaro
Kelar Ashstead’s importance to the territory extends beyond feeding it. The food stocks it produces are one half of the practical basis for the Gloomreach alliance — the other half being the forged goods from Vaskrud Delve. Disrupting Kelar Ashstead’s production would not merely cause food shortages within Karskaro; it would compromise the territory’s primary alliance at its most concrete point. This is understood by Karskaro’s leadership and, most accounts suggest, by the Gloomreach Dominion as well.
