Session 11: Red Cards Table Revision - Vault Voice Rewrite
Focus: Rewriting Red Cards to match atmospheric Vault Voice
What We Did
- Identified issue: Red Cards table didn’t match Vault Voice (too mechanical, lacked narrative punch)
- Reviewed Colostle rules inspiration PDF to understand effective prompt structure
- Established new pattern: 2-4 sentence prompts that paint vivid scenes, varied structure to avoid formula
All 10 Red Cards Rewritten (Ace-10)
Rewrote all cards collaboratively:
- Ace: Hidden cache (pristine vs picked over)
- 2: Small game (trap for max yield vs hunt for speed)
- 3: Fruit trees (climb carefully vs shake violently)
- 4: Fishing spot (atmospheric, patience-based)
- 5: Spice patch (aromatic discovery, open-ended challenge)
- 6: Local merchant (fair vs opportunistic trader)
- 7: Large game (neutral temperament, read to decide approach)
- 8: Abandoned camp (supplies strewn, left in haste)
- 9: Sealed container (guarded vs unguarded)
- 10: Land owner (negotiate fee vs intimidate/fight)
Key Decisions
Writing Principles:
- Genre-neutral, exciting, clear
- Varied sentence structure
- Atmospheric without being prescriptive
Documentation Updates:
- Cleaned up Red Cards document: removed old table, updated headers
- Drafted complete Black Cards table for review (10 prompts, Ace-10)
Black Cards Design
- Black Cards use dual-nature design: Spades (social challenges) vs Clubs (environmental challenges)
- Same situation prompt works for both suits
- Modifier determines if it’s a people problem or terrain problem
Progress Update
- Red Cards table now complete and written in proper Vault Voice
- Black Cards table drafted and ready for refinement next session
Session 10: Exploration Phase - Red Cards Redesign and Yield System
Focus: Simplifying ingredient tracking and designing yield mechanics
The Problem
- Identified practical issue: specific ingredient tracking too granular for 11-13 year old audience
- Inspired by Colostle’s situation-based prompts with binary suit modifiers
Major Changes
Card Consolidation:
- Consolidated Hearts and Diamonds into single Red Cards - Ingredients table
- Changed from specific types (proteins/vegetables) to situation-based prompts (10 total)
Multi-Stat Opportunities:
- Many situations allow Foraging, Combat, or Social approaches
- Creates more engagement in group play (multiple characters can attempt same situation)
Two-Step Resolution:
- d20 success check
- Yield dice roll for quantities
Success Tier Bonuses:
- Yes but: +0
- Yes and: +2
- Nat 20: +4 + reward table
Yield Dice Progression by Restaurant Tier:
- d6 (1★) → d8 (2★) → d10 (3★) → d12 (4★) → d12+2 (5★)
Generic Ingredient Categories:
- Switched to: proteins, vegetables, fruits, spices
- Player imagination fills in genre details
- Simplified tracking for GM-less design: “3 proteins, 2 vegetables” instead of “2 dragon steaks, 1 phoenix egg”
Documentation Updates
- Created “Red Cards - Ingredients.md” with all 10 situation prompts
- Updated Exploration Resolution.md with complete yield system and success tiers
- Updated Exploration Card System.md to reflect new Red card framework
- Updated Job System.md with yield dice progression table
- Marked Hearts Table.md and Diamonds Table.md as superseded (kept for reference)
- Updated Decision Log with new locked decisions
Progress Update
- Exploration Phase now 85% complete (up from 70%)
- Overall game progress: 35% complete (up from 30%)
- Next up: Continue Job System (rewards, job cards) or begin Cooking Phase mechanics
Session 9: Job System - 5-Star Tier Framework Design
Focus: Creating restaurant prestige tier system
What We Designed
5-Star Prestige System:
- 1★ food truck → 5★ world-class
- Tier narrative progression matching restaurant reputation
Grid Scaling by Tier:
- 1★-2★: 5x3
- 3★: 5x3 to 5x4
- 4★: 5x4 to 5x5
- 5★: 5x5 minimum
Face Card Tier System:
- Uses suit symbolism: ♥ Tier 1 → ♠ Tier 4
- Kings: Bosses
- Queens: Side quests
- Jacks: Merchants
Face Card Pool Progression:
- 1★: Hearts only
- 5★: Heavy Clubs/Spades
Key Decisions
Ingredient Quality:
- Scales through player skill, not tier inflation
Natural 1 Milestone Unlock:
- Auto-fail at 1★-2★
- Complication-only at 3★-5★
Progressive XP Curve:
- Higher tiers take more sessions to unlock
Session Structure:
- Percentage-based (40/30/15/15) remains constant across tiers
Documentation Created
- Created Job System.md document with complete tier framework
- Updated Decision Log with Job System locked decisions
Progress Update
- Job System now 30% complete (tier framework done, job cards/rewards/expectations still needed)
- Overall game progress: 30% complete (up from 25%)
- Next up: Complete Job System design (rewards, crowd expectations, job cards)
Session 8 (Part 3): Organizational Improvement - Separated Revision History
Focus: Reducing Decision Log context bloat
What We Did
- Created standalone Revision History.md document
- Moved “Current Focus” section to Revision History.md
- Moved all revision history entries to Revision History.md
- Updated Decision Log.md to link to Revision History instead of containing it inline
Tool Updates
- Updated game-focus skill to load Revision History.md when starting sessions
- Updated game-focus skill wrap-up protocol to update Revision History.md for session tracking
Impact
- Decision Log now focused on locked decisions, priorities, and backlog only
- Revision History now tracks session-by-session progress and current focus
Session 8 (Part 2): Combat Resolution Clarification - Wiki-style documentation
Focus: Establishing single source of truth for combat mechanics
What We Did
- User requested clarification that combat uses standard d20 + Combat stat resolution (no special combat mechanics)
- Added explicit “Combat Resolution” section to Character Mechanics.md as canonical source
- Updated multiple documents to link to Character Mechanics for combat resolution
Files Updated
- Exploration Card System.md
- Exploration Resolution.md
- Vault Knowledge.md
- Decision Log (locked-in decisions)
Key Decision
- Combat explicitly documented as using standard d20 resolution with no special rules
- All documents now link to Character Mechanics.md as single source of truth
Session 8 (Part 1): Character Documents Review - Fixed stat distribution inconsistencies
Focus: Mathematical accuracy and internal consistency
Issues Fixed
Host:
- Fixed Pure Host example stats: +0/+0/+4 (was +2/+0/+2)
- Clarified point allocation description
- Improved specialty bonus clarity
Forager:
- Fixed Pure Forager example stats: +4/+0/+0 (was +2/+2/+0)
- Clarified point allocation description
- Improved specialty bonus clarity
Butcher:
- Fixed Pure Butcher example stats: +0/+4/+0 (was +2/+2/+0)
- Clarified point allocation description
- Improved specialty bonus clarity
Verified Clean:
- Chef, Pastry Chef, and Food Scientist had no issues
Impact
- All 6 character documents now mathematically consistent and accurate
- “Pure specialist” examples now correctly show max investment in specialty stat
- Point allocation descriptions now clarify players can invest in any stat including their specialty
- Specialty bonus references now clearly distinguish between automatic bonus (+2 or +1) and total stat value
Progress Update
- Character System remains at 90% complete (only cooking specialties remain, blocked by cooking mechanics design)
- Ready to design Cooking Phase mechanics next
